Press Release 11/12/09
With Christmas Eve only two weeks away, the Town is staring to get the Christmas feel & Christmas Decorations have been put up in the Streets by members of the Moyneyana Festival Committee, Port Fairy Folk Festival Construction Crew, under the guidance of Peter O'Keefe & the use of the Folk Festival Forklift; the Moyneyana Festival Committee is very grateful of their help. Decorations will soon be put up on the wall of the Lecture Hall on the Village Green & the traditional Tree erected on Christmas Eve.
There are a few houses around Town preparing their entries into the Port Fairy Rotary Club Christmas Lights Competition, so if you haven't got yours up I am sure it is not too late.
The New Year's Eve Firework site, off Regent Street near the Rail Trail, has been slashed, thanks to the Port Fairy Show Committee, raked by Neville Bartlett & burnt by the Port Fairy CFA members, and the firing area cut short, all these people helping to get a Community Event off the ground, Port Fairy style.
An event that takes place during the Moyneyana festival is the firing of a Cannon at Battery Point; we hear the Cannon "Boom" do we stop & think who does the firing. I went last year, an informative talk was given prior to firing, it was great. This activity has been done by volunteers for a number of years. Neville Bartlett & John Bock are both leaving town, so if anyone is interested in keeping this activity going, please contact Henry on 0407 683 221, they will need an explosives licence. The Moyne Shire Council supplies the black powder.
The Festival Committee hopes that you have all been busy planning your floats for the Moyneyana Street Procession at 8.00pm, with the theme "Astronomy-The Universe yours to Discover" entry forms available from the Port Fairy Visitor Information Centre in Bank Street. But please no water bombs.
New Year's Eve will again see the staging of a race with a difference, the Retro Race or Backward Sprint Championships at 7.30pm in Sackville Street, registration at 10.00am, heats at 11.00am at Southcombe Park. This last year's race was won by Morgan Mc Clure in 15.91 seconds a new Australian Record & female winner Lauren Thompson in 16.94 seconds.
On Port Fairy's Village Green the live band Bushwahzee will start off New Year's Eve celebrations, then the Retro Race, the Moyneyana Street Procession, followed by live music with the Plough Boys plus a midnight Fireworks Spectacular from the many generous sponsors.
MESSIAH information
The wonderful unique Port fairy performance of Handel's MESSIAH will again be held in St John's Church on MONDAY 28th December 8pm.
This performance is a "people's Messiah", an event where local and visiting singers are welcome to join in the chorus - with no rehearsal! -yet fully participate in an orchestra led by a team of professional musicians. This year we are delighted to have Hamilton's ANGUS CHRISTIE to conduct his first Port Fairy Messiah. Angus conducts the Hamilton orchestra and directs vocal groups, and has both sung in , and directed other Messiah performances,
Visiting solo vocalists Kerry Gill (soprano) Tania Ferris (alto) and James Payne (bass,) have all sung with Australia Opera and Vic Opera Companies, and popular tenor Andrew Wailes is well known after his exciting conducting of this event last year. Andrew recently directed the Mary Mac Killop Mass performances in Portland and Mt Gambier.
The cello section features James Churchill and Sharon Draper from the Melb. Symphony orchestra, and Melbourne/New Zealand organist Janet Gibbs has a feature role, playing the beautiful 1917 pipe organ.
All performers do perform for "love not money", making this once again a very special annual event. This year we again expect to have a FULL HOUSE -tickets are only available at the door.
Many members of the choir come from Horsham, Portland, Geelong and Hamilton to enjoy this exciting event.
To join the chorus - just come on the night. Further details contact Julie Mc Erlain 55 682075.
