Press Release 13/12/08
"Don't be backward in coming Forward"
The Moyneyana Festival Committee does not want you to be backward in coming forward to enter the New Year's Eve Retro Race or Backward Sprint Championships. The Retro Sprint will be staged for the fifth time in Sackville Street Port Fairy as part of the 61st New Year's Eve celebrations at 730pm. This is a 100 metres backwards running race, with registrations & heats taking place at Southcombe Park at 11.00am New Year's Eve.
This event proved very popular last year with a crowd of about 15,000, the race being won by Alex Gillings for the second year running.
Retro running is fun to watch and apparently uses more calories than forward running, obviously requires more skill, develops balance & flexibility.
Registration forms will be available from the Visitor Information Centre or by contacting Maureen Hedger on 5568 1653, the event is supported by the Port Fairy Cricket Club and the Port Fairy State Emergency Service.
With Christmas only a month away, don't forget to decorate the house and enter the Port Fairy Rotary Club's Christmas Lights Competition for private residences.Entry forms available from Brookes Hardware and Belfast Emporium; with 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prizes being announced on Christmas Eve on the Village Green.
You can also come along and be the best dressed Christmas Family and add to the Family Christmas spirit on the Village Green, have the kids faces painted by the Colour Angel , jumping castle, receive a NAB show bag, community BBQ, listen to the Port Fairy Citizens Band all for Free. Port Fairy Belfast Lions Club spinning wheel and see Santa arrive at 7.30pm.
New Year's Eve will see the staging of 61st Procession which will commence at 8.15pm so please get your entry in early by picking up an entry form from the Port Fairy Visitor Information Centre, completing it and returning it before Wednesday 31st December 2008.
I have recently seen a photo of an entry some years back of a giant Swan on a trailer, all the feathers made out of crepe paper, and one year there were 68 entries, which can be a float, car, bicycle or just walk, so we hope to see you there.
